I'm DJ Johns — a UK DJ based in Barcelona. Hip-hop and R&B are home turf, played open-format with a turntablist edge: classic 90s and 00s records as the backbone, current rap and R&B on top, cuts and scratches wherever a track leaves room. When the night calls for it I switch lanes into funky house and techno — the other half of how I learned.

I started at 16 on a pair of belt-driven Citronic PD-1 turntables and a CS-3 mixer. My two mentors both had Technics 1200s — one owned nothing but hip-hop, the other nothing but house — so I learned to mix on their vinyl and came out playing both, which is why the range is still wide today. Those years included co-hosting the Phase 2 beach parties with another DJ. When I moved to Spain in 2007, shipping turntables and record boxes across borders got heavy and expensive, so the crates went digital and I never looked back.

None of that history matters much on the night. What matters is that the floor stays full: I read the room and mix live from the first record to the last, I turn up with my own gear and one line to your sound system, and if it's a corporate night the edits are clean.
